EAU CLAIRE (WQOW) – Yes, you can still file your taxes for free directly to the IRS, despite Elon Musk saying the program’s group was deleted.
Musk, who is leading President Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency efforts, posted on X Monday saying the consulting group that developed IRS Direct File has been deleted.

But Wisconsin Department of Revenue Secretary-Designee David Casey is assuring Wisconsin taxpayers that they do have access to the service for the rest of the 2025 tax season.
Wisconsin is one of the 25 states where Direct File is available in 2025. It allows people who lived and worked in Wisconsin for all of 2024 to file their federal return directly to the IRS for free.
Casey said the service was made for wage-earners with simple income filings.
“It’s really providing the service for the taxpayer that probably needs it the most,” he said. “It’s something the wage-earner, the more middle-income person is going to benefit from.”
This is the first year Direct File is available in Wisconsin for federal taxes. Wisconsinites who using Direct File are likely eligible to use the WisTax program to file their state returns for free as well.
Casey said both systems are safe and secure, using identity verification and secure file transfer, and average about 11 minutes to complete.
The deadline to file is April 15th.
